Cantonese World Supremacy!
Ever since my friend suggested I should teach Mandarin (NEVER!!! Down with simplified characters and cultural imperialism!) new Cantonese students have been pouring in. There was something about making a decision, having a goal in mind, that jolted my brain into action. My goal is world supremacy for Cantonese.
Yesterday a new group of four students started (not the people in the photos) and they were a joy! They picked up everything right away. As usual we kicked off with the most important thing in this battle against the obliteration of Cantonese: “How do you say …. in Cantonese?” So I told the four new students to ask me how to say something, anything, in Cantonese, using that method.
And for the first time in my entire career, one of them asked me “How do you say Supremacy in Cantonese?” Reader, I didn’t know. Isn’t that funny? I looked it up and found only “white supremacy” but it probably works for any supremacy. The word had the suffix ‘ism’ like imperialISM, in it. Like cultural imperialism.
But you don’t have to come to Central and take lessons with me just to learn how to say everyday words like ‘lemon tea’ ‘how much’ and ‘supremacy.’ You can learn it off this easily downloadable video for beginners!
Remember, being able to even order a beer in Cantonese makes the world One More of Us, One Fewer of Them.
