Last weekend we were in Mui Jau (梅州)which, although it’s in Guangdong province, bears the dubious distinction of being completely Mando speaking. People told me it was because it was a Hakka stronghold, but I →
So I’ve made this two-hour Cantonese learning DVD as I’ve mentioned once or twice. Here is a short excerpt giving you a little glimpse into Going Native. It’s only HK$100, including shipping inside Hong Kong, a few dollars if outside. If you’re a not quite novice in the wonderful world of Cantonese, I really recommend this DVD which has, well, pretty much everything you’ll need, really.
Just shoot me an email: cecilie@http://localhost:8888/Fish and I’ll invoice you through PayPal.
Would you like to travel around China but are worried about your Mandarin being not up to scratch (or non-existent)?
Now you can get all the Mandarin words and expressions needed for getting around the Middle Kingdom in this handy video which covers train and bus travel, hotel stay, eating and drinking and other situations you might find yourself in when you, like us, are going to for example Hong Kong to Kazakhstan, by train…
Cecilie eats her way across Americas Chinese restaurants speaking only Cantonese. If the staff don’t speak Cantonese then she leaves….unless she is really hungry.
Cecilie visits China and looks at the fun side of life. More information soon.

Last Saturday I started a new thing: Learn everything about Chinese characters in two hours. Ten people turned up, and when they staggered out of the venerable Honolulu Coffee Shop two hours and fifteen minutes after they’d sauntered in, indeed they knew everything about Chinese characters.
Everything they need to know about looking them up in the dictionary, that is. Now comes the long slog of trying to read the newspaper and all that. Yes, it takes a few hours, but if it was easy, even idiots would be at it, right? And don’t forget, even very small children can do it, so why not you?
It was good fun (for me) and we had competitions of which team could look up sentences like “I love beer” (我好鍾意飲啤酒)(o hou jung yi yam be jau) the fastest.
And I have to say I was amazed at how quickly they learnt.
Everybody had a grounding in spoken Cantonese, which really helped.
So, contrary to the beliefs of about 1.4 billion Chinese, learning Chinese is NOT genetic. Another victory for Whitey! I’m doing another crash-course this Saturday, May 8th, at 3pm.
When I launched my Cantonese course on DVD (DWD) last Friday, there were mumblings about this “just being the same films as on You Tube” which, quite right, you can access free. However, the things →
Last weekend I went to Guangzhou with some students, one of whom had been studying Cantonese since last November. We spent the day doing our own thing and met up at night. My student, let’s →
Cantonese or Mandarin? That is what a lot of new students (clients, victims) ask me. If you live in Hong Kong and seldom if ever go to the mainland – no contest! Cantonese is the →
