Hi people! I’m going to take Adventure Trip off my new website as there wasn’t a big market for going into Guangdong province (weird) but the trips still go on, of course. There are so →
People are busy and don’t always have time to commit to one or two hours of studying Cantonese every week. But does that mean you can’t learn Cantonese? NO!
With Happy Jellyfish Language Bureau’s many crash courses you can learn basic Cantonese through the medium of a topic that interests you in only a couple of hours! And with the magic words you learn during the fun and hands-on course, you can then go out on your own and get Hong Kong (or other Canto-speaking) people to teach you the rest of the vocabulary you’ll need.
If you choose to take one of the Pui O crash courses or general courses, you’ll enjoy the added bonus of tea and coffee cups matching your outfit! (Male or female.)
As well as “shopping” “drinking” and “chatting” you can also choose a topic close to your heart and I will make a crash course around it. Unless it’s criminal law – that takes at least three hours…
Sign up today, speak basic Cantonese tomorrow. And then, before you know it, you’re fluent.
Yesterday I had an email from a … person, who said: “I sobbed vehemently when I saw your last Sunday Morning Post entry had come and gone.” Me too, mate, me too. Except I didn’t sob. I got pissed off, just like I did when my programme on RTHK, Naked Cantonese, came to an end. That’s my nature, or actually, the way I was brought up. We didn’t do sadness, only anger.
But now I can admit it, yes, I feel loss-induced sadness because I loved that column. Loved! Looking for material for it made China trips so much richer and even more surreal.
Now I have nothing.
But as they say, when one door closes, another one slams you in the face! So I have great hopes for the future. And of course the uphill battle of making Cantonese a world language becomes steeper and steeper every day, so there’s that.
琴日 – Kam yat (yesterday)
承認 – Seng yeng (admit)
唔開心 – M hoi sam (not happy)
This is 54 seconds of our three week trip. More later in the documentary you can download from this site!
I’m so afraid of the dentist, I go every four months. That sounds like a contradiction and a half, but it’s true. Going every four months gives me peace of mind and no cavities. (Also, →
Where are these people going? Could they be going to the headquarters of venerable bank HSBC, you know, The World’s Local Bank that you can only access if you live in China or Hong Kong →
Ahhrghhh! I normally love making and editing films but this one from Hainan Island is dragging. Is it because I made it a long time ago and it’s no longer fresh? Or is it because →
Sleepy backwater Pui O, a haven of backwaterishness and sleepiness. Who would think this village and especially its beach would become a hub for mainlanders on shopping sprees? They spend the days shopping in the →
Before Cantonese, a little sad and wistful Woo-hoo! It’s moving forward so fast. Got a great little group together for Radio Lantau’s Cantonese course CantoNews! Making podcasts from all over this wondrous island, we’re going →
Well, I haven’t not said it before but only to a handful of people: if you’re a student of mine studying at the hallowed halls of Honolulu or just want to go to legendary Honolulu →
This morning, as most mornings, I went to the beach with my trusty dogs Koldbrann and Lasi. It was raining vigorously, a phenomenon not uncommon in Hong Kong and southern China. Rain is water, water →
Last night I cooked for eight people, Sichuan food naturally. Now I’ve got the mother of all washings-up to grapple with. Cooking for eight people is three days’ work altogether and the dish-washing is pretty →
I’m running a series on Facebook called Beer Is Beautiful, largely featuring this woman and her associates. And other people I know. The other day I tried ‘beer is beautiful’ in Cantonese in Honolulu Coffee →
Sometimes I’m tempted to give up the whole Cantonese thing. I mean, what’s the point? The Mando behemoth is going to roll Hong Kong and the Cantonese-speaking world into the ground and pour concrete on →
